Responsibilities for the role of Teaching Assistant

  • To support learners to provide evidence on behaviours, underpinning knowledge, work-based skills, learning & overall progress for each apprentice
  • Supervise and provide support for learners, including those with special educational needs, ensuring their safety and access to learning
  • Actively assist with the development and implementation of Individual Learning Plans/targets and EHC plans
  • Build and establish constructive and professional relationships with young people and interact with them according to their individual needs
  • Actively promote the inclusion and acceptance of all learners
  • Work to encourage young people to interact with others and engage in teaching activities led by the teacher/tutor
  • Assist learners to engage in teaching activities and shared active learning using digital platforms/Google Classroom and assistive technology
  • Aid in the setting of challenging and demanding expectations and promote self-esteem and independence
  • Provide feedback to learners concerning incremental progress and achievement under the guidance of the teacher/tutor
  • Undertake structured and agreed learning activities and teaching programmes, adjusting activities according to learner responses
  • Help prepare, maintain and use equipment and resources required to meet the lesson plans and relevant learning activities and assist young people in their use
  • Create and maintain a purposeful and supportive teaching environment, following lesson/curriculum teaching plans
  • Work to establish clear communication and professional relationships with the teacher/tutor
  • Use strategies, in liaison with the teacher/tutor, to support young people to achieve learning goals
  • Assist with the planning and preparation of learning activities
  • Supervise activities and support learners with their individual work as directed
  • Monitor learners’ responses to learning activities and accurately record achievement and knowledge, skills and behaviour progress as directed
  • Provide regular and useful feedback to teachers on learners’ incremental achievement and progress in lessons
  • Promote positive and professional behaviour encouraging young people to take responsibility for their own behaviour
  • Assist with curriculum displays and the distribution and collection of teaching resources within the classroom
  • Observe and adhere to safeguarding policy and regulations for the organisation and its stakeholders

Skills and Experience for the Role of Teaching Assistant

  • Must hold qualifications at Appropriate level 2 or level 3 supporting teaching and learning qualifications or be willing to work towards
  • Safeguarding, Prevent and E&D (Training up to date) and valid
  • Must hold a current First Aid certificate or willingness to work towards it if required 3
  • Ideally have an understanding of FE teaching methodology to support the thrust of this role
  • An understanding of the range of teaching activities expected in FE Colleges
  • Able to support teaching delivery to learners of all levels and abilities, and to use flexible and innovative methods of delivery as required
  • Must be able to transfer practical experience into useful learning activities for the benefit of student
  • The ability to demonstrate flexibility and teamwork is an essential requirement
  • The ability to review learning needs and actively seek learning opportunities is of paramount importance
  • Must have a passion for working with children and young people, including those with Special Educational Needs
