We are now recruiting for Senior Health and Safety Officer to join our corporate safety team.

As part of the corporate safety team, you will proactively promote compliance in all aspects of health, safety and welfare at work and ensure the Council complies with appropriate legislation, regulations, and professional standards.

Your main day to day focus will be in relation to delivering health and safety services within our Housing and Environmental Services Teams. These services focus mainly on the provision of our social housing, waste collection and parks services. Although primary focus will be on these areas you will also be required to work across all areas of the council, including its subsidiary companies

Your duties will include, but not be limited to:

  • Promoting a positive safety culture and preparing content for internal health and safety communications and campaigns.
  • Providing advice, support/guidance, training.
  • Ensuring robust risk assessments are in place.
  • Ensure all accidents, work-related ill health and violent incidents are investigated and actions identified to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Delivery of an agreed proactive inspection/audit programme across the full breadth of the council’s operations.
  • Assessing the suitability of contactors information.
  • Continually reviewing the systems and processes employed in the delivery of the Council’s services and ensuring that managers are aware of the latest health and safety legislation relevant to their areas of work.
  • Ensuring the day-to-day delivery of an effective health and safety service.
  • Providing technical and operational support to the Health & Safety Officer.

The successful candidate will be an experienced professional with a minimum level 3 NEBOSH General Certificate and preferably able to demonstrate a commitment to continuing professional development via IOSH membership.

You will be able to demonstrate a high level of technical expertise, gained within a functionally diverse organisation. Experience within one of the key core services listed above is essential. Public sector or local government experience would be advantageous. It is acknowledged that this role requires expertise over a functionally diverse organisation, therefore, a development plan to improve knowledge of a limited number of key areas, within an agreed time period, may be considered for the right candidate.

Collaboration and excellent interpersonal skills are essential, as is your proven ability to influence change and develop practical and cost-effective solutions. You will bring strong organisational skills, the ability to present information effectively to a range of audiences and be able to deliver training initiatives across a broad range of topics.

We offer a competitive salary, enrolment in the local government pension scheme, a generous annual leave entitlement starting at 26 days pro rata per annum and increasing with service, free car parking*, a whole host of family-friendly benefits, flexi-time, hybrid working, 1 days’ paid volunteering leave, a health cashback plan, access to an employee benefits platform, and £10/month membership at one of our four gyms in the district.
