Legal Cashier
Reports To: Head of Finance
Location: Newport, South Wales

A brand new role has arisen within a leading law firm for a Legal Cashier / Legal Accounts Assistant. This is a full time permanent role in Newport.
To ensure full compliance with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) Accounts Rules, while helping safeguard the business and its clients from money laundering, fraud, and financial mismanagement.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to undertake the following duties:
- Input and authorisation of CHAPS/BACS payments
- Handling internal and external finance queries
- Legal Aid processing and reconciliation
- Client-to-office and office-to-client transfers
- Daily and monthly cash reconciliations
- Providing cash for Court of Protection clients
- Completing monthly bank reconciliations
- Submitting VAT returns for service companies
- Processing Stamp Duty Land Tax payments
- Recording card payments and processing refunds
- Managing direct debits and standing orders
- Handling staff expense claims
- Month-end financial preparation
- Identifying and implementing process improvements
- Ensuring compliance with SARs, VAT, and anti-money laundering regulations
- Other finance-related administrative duties as required

Essential:
- Strong administrative and organisational skills
- Proven accounting background
- Effective communication across teams and stakeholders
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel
- Ability to prioritise workload, manage deadlines, and work independently or as part of a team
- Willingness to undertake mandatory or role-specific training
- Adaptability in using financial and legal software systems
- Client-focused with a commitment to high service standards
- Ensures tasks outside of role scope are approved before undertaking
- Willingness to perform additional duties as reasonably required by management
Person Specification
Knowledge, Training & Qualifications
Essential:
- Solid understanding of the Solicitors Accounts Rules
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Experienced user of Excel functions and tools
- 5 GCSEs (or equivalent), including Maths and English at Grade C or above
- Strong literacy, numeracy, and word processing capabilities
- Familiarity with ledgers, disbursements, and account procedures
Experience
Essential:
- Minimum of 4 years experience in a legal accounting or finance environment
- Comfortable using legal practice management systems or financial platforms
- Confident when dealing with clients over the phone or in person
- Experienced in using computerised accounting or MIS systems
- Familiarity with handling cash and cheques
Desirable:
- Experience dealing with a broad client base, including corporate entities and high-net-worth individuals
