Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

(SolidWorks, FEA)

The Role

Our energy products manufacturing client based in Oxford is seeking a highly-motivated and talented Senior Mechanical Engineer with industrial experience to join a small, talented development team to evolve and grow their product range.

The successful applicant will be able to work to tight deadlines, have strong communication skills, and the ability to work independently within a small team. You will be working alongside highly motivated and capable PhD level engineers and would be expected to integrate well into this environment, contributing to a range of live projects.

The technical team have a rigorous internal technical review process, and the successful applicant will feel comfortable making technical presentations and writing reports to a very high standard, working within a technical review environment alongside the rest of the engineering team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support mechanical product design and development activities.
  • Create product drawings in an appropriate CAD package, including detailed understanding of

tolerancing, dimensioning and stress analysis (finite element and hand calculation).

  • Develop models and simulations (e.g., finite element analysis, MATLAB) to solve technical problems, including post-processing of results, analysis, and presentation.
  • Develop and improve manufacturing and assembly processes for both new and existing products.
  • Prototype assembly, verification testing and transfer to production.

Required Skills and Experience

  • A degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering

o 3-5 years working in an industrial product development environment.

o Experience of metal product manufacturing methods, in particular casting and forging processes, would be highly beneficial.

Candidates should have demonstrable expertise in some of:
o Mechanical component and/or pressure vessel design
o Stress analysis of safety-critical components
o Working to industry design standards or similar internal processes

• Proficiency in several the following tools (listed in order of importance):

o CAD: Modelling and drafting for manufacture in Solidworks or similar

o Finite element analysis: Abaqus, ANSYS, NASTRAN, Solidworks Simulation, (or equivalent package)

  • Can do and hands on approach when needed to support wider team activities.
