We are looking for a Social Worker to assist the Department in providing a high quality adoption service for Looked After Children.

The role:

The post involves assessing the needs of adopted children and their families, undertaking direct work with adopted children and families to improve attachments, strengthen bonds and support carers with a therapeutic model of parenting, working across the Adoption Service as needed.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To assist with duty enquiries including responding to enquiries from prospective adopters, approved adopters and birth family members in line with departmental policy and guidance. This currently includes the letterbox scheme.
  • To work in partnership with children’s Social Workers, Adoption Service Family Finders and Assessment and Recruitment Social Workers to achieve the best outcomes for children.
  • To complete high quality assessments in line with Signs of Success/wellbeing and deliver packages of support to improve the outcomes for children.
  • To offer guidance and support to approved adopters in accordance with Adoption Standards, Regulations and Guidance and departmental policy and procedures.
  • To offer advice and guidance to field workers regarding adoption specific issues and to share knowledge about services and resources.
  • To raise the profile of adopter-led support services in Sheffield with a commitment to supporting and developing these initiatives .
  • Attending and contributing to case planning meetings, reviews and child protection case conferences and providing written reports as appropriate and when required.
  • To raise the profile of the adoption support team in Sheffield via groups, events and within the consortium.
  • To report effectively through departmental information systems and supervision.
  • To provide appropriate reports for provider services, the courts and related agencies/services as required.
  • Taking part in running groups for the service. These include support groups for adopters and their children. Taking part, with appropriate in training, in direct group work with children and attending fun days and Xmas parties.
  • Attendance at team meetings and whole service events.
  • Participation in training and events for adoptive parents.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to develop knowledge of life story work and therapeutic parenting and birth background work.
  • To work as an effective team member to maximise the safe care of Sheffield children in adoptive placements that are able to meet the identified needs of the child.
  • To promote the rights of children.
  • To value adopters and affirm their contribution to the care of children.
  • To work flexible hours according to the needs of the service.

  • DIPSW or equivalent qualification in Social Work
  • Social Work England registration
  • Enhanced and in date DBS certificate.
  • Excellent communication skills and be able to make good decisions based on information available.
  • Can work alone and within/contribute to a team/multi-agency set ups
  • Possess knowledge of service needs.
  • Competent IT skills and be able to navigate electronic file/recording systems.
  • Can write clear, concise, and robust assessment/reports/files.
  • Have a flexible approach to work and working hours when the need arises
