The Role

Are you ready to make a significant impact in a newly scoped pivotal role? This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic individual to join our team as an Engineering Manager. This position offers the chance to review current processes, implement substantial changes, and shape the future of our maintenance operations.

As part of our succession planning, the Engineering Manager will benefit from approx. 12 months handover and you will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and managing all maintenance activities to ensure the smooth and continuous operation of our facility. Your role will be pivotal in driving the implementation of new preventative maintenance programs while managing existing ones, all while upholding the highest standards of safety and efficiency.

In this strategic, more hands-off role, you will lead and manage a team of skilled mechanical and electrical maintenance operatives. You will ensure they are well-trained, motivated, and equipped to perform their duties effectively, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement. We are looking for this role to bring a truly fresh approach and whilst your initial focus will be Maintenance Operations, in parallel we want you to bring the existing team together to work more cohesively and collaboratively.

Your key responsibilities will include minimising downtime, maintaining equipment, and enhancing the overall efficiency of our production operations. This may involve the installation of new equipment tailored to meet the evolving needs of our company.

We are seeking a self-motivated, organised individual with a keen attention to detail and excellent communication skills. You should be capable of managing multiple tasks simultaneously and comfortable liaising with stakeholders at all levels of the business. Experience working in a fast-paced environment and strong interpersonal skills are essential.

Key Tasks / Accountabilities

  • Team Leadership: Manage, coach, and develop a high-performing maintenance team to achieve objectives and deliver continuous improvements.

Foster a culture of safety, teamwork and engineering hygiene.

  • Resource Management: Identify and deploy necessary technical skills, resources, and systems for projects, including external resources as required.
  • Strategic Planning: Develop and implement a comprehensive maintenance strategy to ensure continuous operation of critical machinery and equipment, including a comprehensive Planned Preventative Maintenance program to minimise downtime.
  • Operational Coordination: Collaborate with Operations and Technical Directors to set department objectives and review performance.

Work with other departments to understand maintenance needs, plan for downtime, and schedule tasks to minimise production disruptions.

Manage the introduction of new machinery, from specification to installation.

  • Budget and Cost Control: Manage the maintenance budget, control costs, and allocate resources effectively. Develop strategies for managing maintenance material expenditure and fuel consumption.
  • Process Improvement: Identify opportunities for process and equipment improvement to enhance operational efficiency.
  • HR Responsibilities: Understand and apply HR policies, addressing minor HR issues as they arise.

Knowledge Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience as a maintenance supervisor or manager.
  • Experience within a heavy industry, such as foundry, recycling, or quarry and aggregates.
  • Working knowledge of facilities machines and equipment.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings.
  • Ability to effectively plan, organise, and prioritise projects is essential.
  • Strong team player with proven leadership and motivational abilities.

Desirable

  • Relevant management, leadership, or supervisory qualification.
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical/electrical engineering or a related field.
  • Ability to amend engineering drawings.
  • Experience with natural gas combustion systems.
  • Knowledge of Mitsubishi or Siemens programming.
  • Experience of Autocad.
  • Experience of a CMMS system.
