Software Engineer - Automation Solutions

As a Software Engineer you will contribute towards the development of my client's next generation of automation machines, developing motion control software on various PLC platforms, typically Siemens, Rockwell, Beckhoff.

Working for a global automation solution provider, you'll be working on projects Clean Energy, FMCG, and Pharma manufacturers.

What will you do doing?

  • Deliver high-quality software designs that align with both internal and external customer demands as well as regulatory requirements, using a deep understanding of the full lifecycle of projects across pharmaceutical and other process manufacturing sectors.
  • Develop and test PLC and HMI/SCADA software applications, predominantly using Siemens, alongside network design and implementation of protocols like MODBUS and OPC. Essential skills in PLC coding for various systems including Rockwell and Siemens are crucial.
  • Engage in onsite activities such as system commissioning (SAT), post-installation support, and customer training, requiring regular travel both within the UK and internationally.
  • Maintain a high level of commercial awareness during the design process to ensure cost-effective solutions and manage scope changes following standard operating procedures.
  • Actively participate in continuous improvement efforts within the department and effectively communicate project statuses to the Control Systems Manager, customers, and suppliers.
  • Assist in preparation of comprehensive design documentation including I/O lists, Functional Design Specifications (FDS), System Design Instructions (SDI), System Design Specifications (SDS), and FAT/SAT test documents.
  • Support various teams including sales, proposals, projects, and design by providing technical expertise in simulations, estimating, software and hardware selections, and enhancing knowledge in areas like condition monitoring systems and functional/machine safety.

What experience do you need to be successful?

  • Experience in the PLC software design.
  • Experience of working in an innovative environment and providing innovative solutions.
  • Experience in evaluating technical requirements and providing viable solutions.
  • The generation and verification of software design documents.
  • Interpretation of customer requirements and presentation of design solutions at internal design reviews.
  • Applying technical due diligence, being risk aware, performing FMEA and using design studies and POP work to mitigate risk.
  • Knowledge of British and international standards relative to the design and installation of industrial automation systems.

What skills are we looking for?

  • Apprentice trained in Electrical or Mechatronic Engineering or HNC, HND, or BSC in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Proficient in the use of Rockwell and Siemens programming platforms
