JOB SUMMARY

  • Assures optimum quality patient care by serving as a trauma clinical resource liaison for all ancillary departments and medical staff members.
  • Provides supplemental support for data abstraction and entry into the trauma registry.

  • Participate in a trauma registry course, monthly TQIP educational sessions, and attend bi-annual WV Trauma Registry Workshops.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Determines appropriateness of patient entry into the Trauma Registry based on guidelines in the American College of Surgeons “Resources for the Optimal Care of the Injured Patient” as well as the National Trauma Data Standard.
  • In collaboration with the patient, the patient’s family and other members of the health care team, the clinical Trauma Nurse Clinician assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and coordinates treatment plans.
  • Functions as an expert educator, consultant, liaison, leader, and evaluator.
  • Strives to improve and maintain quality of patient care and clinical knowledge and performance of members of the trauma team.
  • Works closely with medical staff, administration and nursing units to fulfill these responsibilities.
  • Ensures that all guidelines and protocols are consistent with the care being provided.
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement and assists with the performance improvement program.
  • Responds to Trauma Team Activations, while present in the building, to act in the role as “scribe”.
  • Participates in Injury Prevention and Community Outreach events and/or programs.
  • Performs basic data collection of demographics and coding of clinical and follow-up data from all sources into trauma registry database.  
  • Participates in quality assurance, monthly data validation, and improvement activities to ensure accuracy of data collection and timely submission of data.
  • Collaborates with the Trauma Program Manager and Trauma PI Coordinator to develop and maintain a set of quality indicators for the trauma program.
  • Responsible for meeting State of West Virginia Trauma Center Standards, America College of Surgeons Criteria, and Joint Commission standards, complying with all mandatory reporting required by the trauma program, complying with corporate and hospital policy and procedures, managing patient information, promoting teamwork and positive customer service.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Reports to Trauma Program Manager.


Minimum Education

Graduate from an accredited school of nursing and licensure by the WV State Board of Nursing as a Registered Nurse- Required.

Bachelor’s Degree Nursing, preferred.

Participate in a trauma registry course, monthly TQIP educational sessions, and attend bi-annual WV Trauma Registry Workshops.

 

Certifications: 

Participate in and pass the AAAM’s Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) course within one year of hire.

Participate in an ICD-10 course or an ICD-10 refresher course every 5 years.

 Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS), and Trauma Nurse Critical Core (TNCC) within 6 months of hire.

Trauma Outcomes Performance Improvement Course (TOPIC) must be completed within 12 months of hire.

Required Licenses

Registered Nurse – WV License Required.

Minimum Work Experience

Minimum two years (2) of critical care, surgical and/or emergency department experience preferred.
