Day (United States of America)The Adelante Project is a program within BIDMC's Center for Violence Prevention & Recovery. Adelante is a collaborative endeavor between BIDMC's CVPR and Brigham & Women's Hospital Violence Intervention and Prevention Programs. Drawing upon one's lived experiences, the Adelante Peer Specialist works as part of a multidisciplinary team to address both the prevention and intervention of human trafficking in our communities. This position reports to the Adelante Project Lead and offers a flexible schedule and possibility of off-hours coverage to serve the needs of this unique patient population. The Adelante Peer Specialist will support a small case load of survivors, providing mentorship and support. The Peer Specialist will also have the opportunity to engage in special projects related to program development, awareness initiatives, and survivor leadership.

Job Description:

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Promote healing-centered engagement through one-on-one support and mentoring to survivors of sex and/or labor trafficking.
  • Serve as a primary link to community-based resources in the Boston-area to better support people who are impacted by human trafficking.
  • Provide training and case-related guidance on-site to health care providers.
  • Work in collaboration with TIP team members and external partners to deliver quality, survivor-centered, and coordinated services.
  • Participate in weekly supervision.
  • Attend all meetings pertaining to this grant in the hospital and community.
  • Utilize data entry program for case management and program reporting purposes.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • 1-3 years related work experience required.
  • Experience as a survivor or experience in supporting survivors of sexual or labor exploitation required.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Confidentiality and compliance with professional ethics.
  • Commitment to social, racial, and gender justice issues.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of human trafficking issues and a personal interest in, and commitment to, working with survivors of trafficking.
  • Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

  • Experience working with diverse groups of people (e.g. race, ethnicity, age, class, gender, sexual orientation, and abilities).

  • Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and converse in English to communicate effectively with medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.
  • Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate full working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures and policies with the ability to use them in varied situations.
  • Team Work: Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members.
  • Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Age based Competencies: Employees in this job must be competent to provide patient care to the following age groups: Young adult: 16-30 years, Middle Age: 30 - 60 years, Elderly: 60+.
  • Physical Nature of the Job:Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move through out the hospital campus
