Description:

  • Tasks may be performed in an indoor and/or outdoor setting.
  • The Assistant must be able to understand and follow both written and oral instructions.
  • May support field activities such as limited operation of field equipment (such as a tractor or cotton picker, and stationary field equipment, such as a module builder.), organization of samples during harvest and/or processing, and limited driving of a company vehicle.
  • Additional tasks may include: Field research operations related to planting, thinning, weeding, pollinations and sample harvest.
  • Sample processing operations including preparation of supplies, sorting, ginning, weighing, preparation for shipping and seed packaging.
  • General facility operations including general clean-up, organization of samples and supplies, and other routine tasks as they arise.

Additional Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • Field and greenhouse experience, such as pest management, planting, harvesting, are desired.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • With guidance from supervision and within established procedures; conducts routine research laboratory activities, information/data management and collection activities, and operates small scale production equipment in support of research and development. Identifies and suggests improvements in methods, plans projects of limited duration and scope, troubleshoots when erroneous or unexpected results occur.
  • Responsible for producing research experimental results, or information/data management results, or assembling and configuring of small scale production equipment and control systems utilizing a variety of techniques, effectively documenting findings and communicating results.
  • Ability to work with smart pads/iPad.
  • Basic knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel).

The Research Assistant position will develop under trained staff to assist in data collection activities for an agricultural research farm. The prospect will do well to have these core competencies to start, but the following skills and abilities will be learned in the process of assisting the Central Operations team.

Experience in GPS Surveying

- Previous experience surveying and mapping desirable

- Some GPS surveying experience using a data logger equipped with GIS software

- A basic understanding of GIS software, import/export shapefiles, editing features

- Ability to continuously carry equipment on back through rough terrain while holding surveying staff for hours at a time

- Ability to input data into data logger and locate previously collected data’s geolocations using GPS and datalogger

- Understands the necessity to collect accurate and precise data

Experience in agricultural research

- Knowledge of row crops

- Competent in following protocols

- Capable of collecting data related to various traits

- Knowledge of crop and plant physiology

- Knowledge of managed stress environments

Experience reading, making maps

- Understands Range Plot

- Able to orient themselves in a field

Strong management and organizational skills

- Organize tasks and resources to promptly conduct research trials

- Supervise and lead diverse groups to achieve data collection objectives
