The hospital Clinical Informatics Specialist (CIS) who is a licensed Registered Nurse, under direct supervision from the hospital clinical informatics leader and according to established policies and procedures functions as an electronic medical record (EMR) system expert and is responsible for assisting in the testing, implementation, support, and optimization of the EMR and other clinical systems. The CIS provides direct support in the implementation and optimization of clinical applications, projects, and initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • The CIS integrates clinical knowledge and informatics expertise to successfully integrate technology into clinical workflow optimizing the EMR experience and promoting end user adoption.
  • The CIS will be knowledgeable in the use and application of data to improve clinical workflow.
  • The CIS will provide direct support to hospital clinical informatics in using data to drive clinical outcomes.
  • The CIS is responsible for purposeful hospital rounding; providing direct support to providers and nurses to ensure end users successfully integrate the EMR into clinical workflow.
  • The CIS ensures consistent and effective use of the EMR that aligns with policy, procedure, and standards.
  • The CIS will create education content to communicate and educate providers and clinicians in EMR changes, initiatives, and projects.
  • The CIS regularly provides suggestions and seeks feedback from physicians and clinicians regarding the EMR.
  • The CIS identifies issues, performs systems testing to troubles-shoot the issue, logs tickets with customer support, escalates to clinical informatics and tracks the issues ensuring timely problem resolution.
  • The CIS collaborates with the hospital CI and MDI to improve physician and clinicians’ satisfaction with the EMR, promote "voice of the customer" and improve IS service and support.

Success Profile

  • Bachelor’s in Nursing required
  • Current Registered Nurse License in the state of employment
  • Current BLS certification through AHA
  • 3 years experience in clinical nursing preferred
  • Certification in Nursing Informatics with ANCC a plus
