This is a full time (0.6 - 0.8 Status), day shift Clinical Nurse Coordinator position in the Labor & Delivery Department.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Clinical Nurse Coordinator is a competent professional nurse who possesses advanced knowledge, skills and abilities in management and leadership as well as in the teaching-learning process. Under the supervision of the Department Director, the Clinical Nurse Coordinator manages day to day functions of the unit including scheduling, delegation of tasks, policy management, and education (in conjunction with the Clinical Nurse Educator). The role includes responsibilities for the functional area of patient care services and that of a resource person, consultant, collaborator, facilitator-instructor, role model, and evaluator. This individual assists in communication of organizational and division-level vision and goals, educates a team of skilled staff, and ensures cost effective and efficient use of allocated resources for optimum outcomes.

The Clinical Coordinator is accountable for compliance with the Montana Nurse Practice Act, Nursing Code of Ethics, and all other applicable regulatory standards.

PRIMARY (ESSENTIAL) DUTIES

  • Knowledgeable in leadership and management principles and is able to readily apply those to the day-to-day operations of the assigned department, to include staffing, scheduling, accurate time keeping, and other duties as assigned.
  • Assists the Clinical Nurse Educator with needs assessments, gap analyses, planning, implementation, and evaluation of learning activities. Participates in designated departments’ briefs, huddles, and debriefs as applicable and appropriate.
  • Assesses, plans, coordinates, develops, and evaluates appropriate competency-based orientation and continuing education programs that will enhance the knowledge base and skill levels of orientees and experienced clinical care providers in the adult women’s/newborns care practice areas. Rounds in departments to ensure education outcomes are achieved.
  • Maintains clinical expertise through hands-on, in-unit demonstrations of skills and competencies and maintaining knowledge currency of women/newborns evidence-based practice. Meets the job requirements of the Clinical Practice RN. 
  • Maintains a mechanism for staff members on all shifts to solicit assistance for problem solving patient care issues through in-house resources, on-line learning and nurse practice resources, and other appropriate mechanisms of communications.
  • Establishes and maintains effective communications and rapport with Medical Staff members in a manner that is receptive to their needs and concerns, thus providing for collaborative working relationships, especially as pertains to staff development. Encourages and seeks out the assistance of the Medical Staff in participating with educational endeavors for staff members.
  • Participates in hospital committees as assigned.
  • Actively participates in continuing education. Participates in required certifications (ie. BLS) applicable to assigned department. Demonstrates high level computer skills for research, utilizes the learning management system, and maintains proficiency of the electronic medical record. Assists the Department Director in maintaining currency of department-level policies.
  • Maintains membership in appropriate/applicable professional organizations as well as networks with peers to keep abreast of the current professional practice and quality-driven environment as it affects clinicians and the Medical Center.
  • Utilizes quality data to identify and define concerns/problems and develops appropriate in-services or continuing education programs to address. Collaborates with IT and Quality professionals to assure nursing documentation systems lend to evidence-based best practices.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills, complies with the policies and procedures of the Medical Center and the Division of Nursing, and demonstrates a commitment to the key values and philosophy of the hospital.
  • Promotes evidence-based nursing practice, which is grounded in the organization’s nursing philosophy, involves the patient and caregivers/significant others with respect to their values, cultural differences, preferences and expressed needs.
  • Functions as the department leader in the absence of the Director.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Maintains availability as a resource person to the director as well as staff. Maintains effective and open communications and acts as a liaison with regard to educational and professional practice activities of assigned departments and the Medical Center.  Maintains open lines of communications with the medical staff and other health professionals.

DEPARTMENT RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports directly to the Department Director. Collaborates closely with the Clinical Nurse Educator to meet organizational learning needs.

EDUCATION/LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing required.
  • Master’s degree in nursing or education preferred.
  • RN Licensed to practice in the State of Montana.
  • NCC clinical specialty certification preferred, if not in possession at time of hire, must acquire within 3 years of hire.
  • BLS and NRP required.
  • Persons not meeting the requirements will be evaluated for eligibility on an individual basis.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Medium workload, frequent standing/walking.  Must be able to fulfill the physical requirements of the RN job description.

  • Maybe exposed to loud noises.
  • May be exposed to blood and body fluids, including those with tuberculosis, HIV positive, hepatitis, body infestations and cytotoxic agents.
  • Must be able to work under stressful conditions which may occur in emergency situations or with a heavy workload.

Weekend Requirements: Per department needs.
