Position Summary

The cardiovascular ultrasound technologist performs the daily clinical operations and a wide variety of technical procedures (e.g adult and pediatric echo, stress echo, contrast imaging, agitated saline studies, vascular ultrasound, and Holter analysis). Enters exam data into CPACs system, ensures completeness of exam, and prepares exam for interpretation. Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as appropriate based on the level of patient contact this position requires. Performs other duties as assigned.

Reports to: Director of Cardiovascular Services

 

Responsibilities of the Position

Performs echocardiography on adults and pediatric patients in accordance with lab protocols and standard practices.

Maintains sterile field. Safely prepares and labels all the medications on the sterile field, continually accounts for number and location of instruments, sharps, sponges to prevent retained foreign objects. Operates and maintains fluoroscopy equipment.

Performs peripheral vascular and carotid imaging in accordance with lab protocols and standard practices.

Reviews in-patient requisitions and prioritizes patient list in order of severity of illness, special procedures, special requests, and equipment availability; revises patient schedule as new procedures are requested and circumstances change.

Performs required quality control checks.

Assures the procurement, storage, and routing of supplies for room operation.

Ensures reusable instruments are maintained and disinfected as required.

Reviews patient information and orders at the time of the procedure. Confirms type of exam and appropriate diagnosis; requests clarification of order if necessary; determines interpreting physician.

Downloads examination images and data into PACS system; enters findings into PACS system upon completion of exam.

Observes and cares for patients throughout examinations to ensure their safety and comfort.

Performs clerical duties, such as record keeping, patient scheduling, or archiving computer images.

Performs legal and ethical duties, including preparing safety or accident reports, obtaining written consent from patients for procedures when needed, or reporting symptoms of abuse or neglect.

Prepares patient for exam by explaining procedure, transferring patient to ultrasound table, applying gel, applying electrodes, and positioning patient properly.

Selects appropriate equipment settings and adjusts patient positions to obtain optimum information.

Communicates technical and patient care related information according to established processes and timelines.

Attends departmental meetings, ensures continuing education and professional growth.

Responsible for system upgrades and testing, importing new employees for the PACS systems.

Primary contact/preceptor for JCC students

Responsible for system upgrades and testing, providing education to staff for upgrades for Paragon.

Mentors and evaluates ultrasound students as required.

Interacts with multiple clinic and hospital staff with professionalism and in a positive manager.

Other tasks and duties as assigned.


Minimum Education

High School Graduate or GED equivalent is required.

Successful completion of a CAAHEP approved school of ultrasound or cardiovascular technology or equivalent experience is required.

 

Certifications/Licenses

Current certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or certification within one year of hire date is required.

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification obtained through the American Heart Association (AHA) is required upon hire.

 

Required Skills

Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
