Description:

Histotechnicians will embed tissue samples into paraffin wax, cut tissue samples into ribbons using a microtome and potentially stain them when applicable for pathologist review in the morning.

1. Accepts laboratory specimens from the accessioning section that will be utilized for processing in the histopathology department.

2. Evaluates the acceptability criteria for each specimen and checks for correct labeling, specimen container and source.

3. Understands the importance of and follows the procedures for appropriate specimen handling and disposal.

4. Understands and follows all the laboratory safety procedures and use of personal protective wear.

5. Performs tissue embedding following established procedures.

6. Performs routine cutting of paraffin blocks on a rotary microtome.

7. Prepares reagents following established procedures.

8. Maintains block files.

9. Store specimens for future retrieval if necessary.

10. Matches slides and reports to ensure correct information is reported.

11. Stains, coverslips and labels slides (automated and manual).

12. Performs special staining procedures (automated and manual).

13. Researches, troubleshoots and resolves inquires or problems within the laboratory.

14. Assists less experienced peers researching, resolving and documenting problems.

15. Performs reagent QC on routinely used reagents.

16. Runs parallel checks on reagents used on instruments for routine lab work.

17. Troubleshoots reagent failures.

18. Performs specimen QC to ensure specimen is appropriate and properly identified for each bench.

29. Note and resolve all specimens not in compliance.

20. Develops stain troubleshooting skills and develops assay troubleshooting skills.

21. Records and determines causes for assay failure.

22. Develops plans with the assistant manager/manager to rectify problems.

23. Assists with other non-technical duties within the laboratory as requested by assistant manager/manager to meet immediate needs of laboratory.

24. Maintains appropriate records, logs as required by laboratory QDx Pathology Services and various regulatory agencies.

25. Maintains adequate stock of working supplies, notifies assistant manager/manager of shortage.

26. Assists with inventory procedures.

27. Participates in required continuing education, in-house training seminars, etc.

28. A working knowledge of reagent stability and storage.

29. Ensures all reagents display the received date, open date and expiration date. Open expiration dates are written on reagent containers, if applicable.

30. Maintains quality results by running standards and controls, verifying equipment function through routine equipment maintenance and advanced trouble shooting; calibrating equipment utilizing approved testing procedures; monitoring quality control measures and protocols. Informs supervisor or manager of problems that might affect or delay result reporting.

31. Ability to understand and use the Laboratory Information System to retrieve pending logs.

32. Regularly checks and records temperatures of incubators, refrigerators, room temperature and humidity. Informs supervisor if corrective action is needed.

33. Keeps testing area, instruments and department clean.
