Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Sunnyvale is seeking an Infection Control Coordinator to be responsible for the identification, reporting, prevention and control of infections and communicable diseases within the organization, including both healthcare associated infections and community-acquired infections.

Knowledgeable of CDC guidelines and definitions of healthcare associated infections (HAI’s), accrediting organization standards, federal and state regulations and national guidelines.

Collaborates with facility leadership and healthcare providers responsible for inpatient and outpatient departments and services, as well as non-patient care support staff, i.e., Maintenance and Environmental Services staff. Assists with inservice programs related to infection prevention and control. Participates in the organization performance improvement program.

What your day will look like:

1. Program Management:

  • Develop, implement and evaluate infection prevention program
  • Communicate infection prevention information to various committees and healthcare workers
  • Participate in Infection Prevention Committee meetings
  • Prioritize high-risk and time-sensitive events
  • Conduct surveillance and investigations utilizing epidemiologic principles
  • Participate in daily rounding in inpatient units and periodic scheduled rounding of outpatient, ancillary, and high-risk areas
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to assess and improve environment of care

2. Design and Deliver Education:

  • Assess and address learning needs
  • Deliver planned educational sessions
  • Deliver just-in-time education and feedback
  • Lead infection prevention education at new hire orientation
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of educational programs and learner outcomes

3. Regulatory Requirements:

  • Comply with regulatory and mandatory reporting requirements
  • Facilitate compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards
  • Stay current on infection prevention and control regulatory and accreditation standards

4. Performance Improvement (PI):

  • Utilize PI methodology as a means of enacting change
  • Define the scope of the project and select appropriate PI tools
  • Monitor and analyze process and outcome measures
  • Participate in PI committees, teams and initiatives
  • Schedule and conduct event analyses/root cause analyses

5. Employee Health:

  • Participate in the development/review of occupational health policies and procedures related to IPC
  • Assess risk of occupational exposures to infectious disease
  • Track rates and trends of occupational exposures
  • Develop immunization and screening programs
  • Review/revise Blood Borne Pathogens Exposure Control plan.

Success Factors:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing, public health, or epidemiology. Masters of Public Health or Nursing is preferred.
  • Certification in Infection Control and Epidemiology (i.e., CIC© preferred) or, attainment within 2 years after employment required for new hires as of April 2021.
  • Preferred Experience:
  • Minimum one year of experience in Infection Prevention and
  • Minimum one year of experience in an acute care setting
  • Current professional RN license issued and/or recognized by Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas
  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Additional languages preferred.
  • The Infection Prevention Coordinator must be able to prioritize work and duties well and must work well under stressful situations. Infection Prevention Coordinator must demonstrate good communication and customer service skills with a variety of patients, physicians, and other health care providers both internal and external to the organization, and must make accurate clinical decisions and judgments quickly. Demonstrate proficiency in knowledge and understanding of statistics, epidemiology, microbiology, and general and advanced nursing techniques.
