Job Summary

Performs clerical and technical support functions for the anatomic pathology laboratory such as specimen receipt and logging, slide filing, and various technical duties. Performs body fluid procedures using the Cytospin centrifuge. Performs various staining and cover-slipping of prepared slides. Assists the Histotechnician in the performance of maintenance activities (i.e. taking temperatures) and housekeeping activities (tissue processor, staining dishes). With the assistance of the Plant Operations personnel, gathers tissue specimens for disposal by off-site company. Prepares, files, and maintains card file for surgical and cytology specimens. Pre-labels cassettes for the Pathologist to be used during surgical grossing. Performs various clerical duties to support the Histotechnician and Pathologists. Processes the send-off of various specimens for referral testing. May be cross-trained to preform phlebotomy in times of short-staffing. Responsible for various housekeeping activities such as cleaning Cytospin parts, cleaning counters, cassettes, and embedding molds. Performs the duties of the Histotechnician in absence (embedding, sectioning, and staining). Orders supplies for the Anatomic Pathology lab sections weekly and as needed. Requisitions and stores alcohol solutions obtained from Pharmacy. Cleans the cutting board. Counts Histology and Cytology workload recording and documentation. Cleans and refills the tissue processor beakers and staining dishes. Performs various other duties as may be assigned by her supervisor, or the Laboratory Director.

Frye Regional Medical Center, located in the beautiful foothills of North Carolina is a 355-bed acute care hospital, 81-bed Behavioral Health facility and more than 70 primary and specialty care providers.

Essential Functions

  • Assures that specimens are received from surgery in a timely manner and records their receipt accurately in the logbook, assuring that all required information is present including demographic, clinical and billing information when applicable.
  • Files surgical slides accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Retrieves surgical slides and blocks as required by the Pathologist from the permanent storage records
  • Performs body fluid procedures using the Cytospin centrifuge in a timely manner using the proper personal protective precautions required.
  • Performs maintenance activities such as taking temperatures and any other maintenance duties required or assigned by the Histology Supervisor in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Performs maintenance activities such as taking temperatures and any other maintenance duties assigned by the Histotechnologist in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Stains and coverslips prepared slides for Cytology and Histology so as to yield a quality slide without air bubbles.
  • Files surgical slides in a timely manner. Retrieves surgical slides and blocks as required by the Pathologist from the permanent storage records.
  • Accurately prepares files, and maintains the card file for cytology specimens in a timely manner.
  • Accurately pre-labels cassettes for the Pathologist, used during the gross examination procedure.
  • Performs various housekeeping activities such as cleaning Cytospin parts, counters, cassettes, embedding molds, and the cutting board in a timely manner.
  • Assists in ordering supplies for the Anatomic Pathology lab sections weekly an is needed to maintain adequate supplies.
  • Requisitions and stores alcohol solutions obtained from Pharmacy to maintain adequate supplies.
  • Cleans and refills the tissue processor beakers and staining dishes as required.
  • Performs various other duties as may be assigned by her supervisor, or the Director of Laboratories.
  • Observes all safety procedures in the handling of patient specimens, controls, reagents, and instrumentation.

Minimum Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred.

 

Minimum Work Experience

  • Six months to one year medical experience, particularly in Histology or the laboratory is preferred.
