Planning Lawyer (Part-Time)

Remuneration: £45,573 - £48,836 plus a market supplement of up to £4,786 per annum (pro rata) and generous benefits including Local Government Pension Scheme.

Introduction:An opportunity has arisen for a Planning Lawyer to join Waverley Borough Council on a part-time basis of around 18 hours per week. The role allows for predominantly remote work, making it ideally suited to those seeking flexibility.

Now is the ideal moment to join the Legal Services team at Waverley, which has recently received a substantial boost in resources. As we forge ahead in developing and refining our services, this presents a genuine opportunity to develop your expertise and build a rewarding career with the Council.

As Planning Lawyer, you will join a friendly and supportive team and advise on all aspects of planning law and policy. You will have conduct of your own caseload and deal with varied and stimulating work on the cutting edge of planning law.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal advice and guidance on planning law, policy, and procedures
  • Draft, review, and negotiate planning agreements, including section 106 agreements
  • Ensure the proper conduct of planning inquiries, including the provision of advocacy at public hearings
  • Represent the council in planning committees on a rota basis. The planning committee often occur in the evening
  • Provide advice and assistance to other members of the legal team in respect of planning law matters

About you:

  • Qualified solicitor, barrister, or legal executive with an up-to-date practising certificate (the cost of the practising certificate will be met annually by Waverley Borough Council)
  • Experience in planning law, preferably gained within a local government environment
  • Be able to demonstrate negotiation skills in practice
  • Be able to provide clear instructions and advice to clients and colleagues alike
