We are seeking a communications Manager to play a crucial role in the success of the Metropolitan Police Service by delivering exceptional external communications.

 This role is vital for maintaining public safety and enhancing the reputation of the service. The Communications Manager will join the Media and communications team and will be instrumental in supporting the organisations priorities and engaging with the community through various media channels.

The ideal candidate will have previous experience working in a busy news desk environment.

Day to Day of the role:

  • Deliver external communications aligned with the ‘A New Met for London’ plan.
  • Provide a 24/7 media service, managing both reactive communications and proactive news generation.
  • Support communication efforts during spontaneous and planned events, including protests, festivals, and ceremonial events.
  • Respond to media inquiries, monitor public commentary, and provide rapid digital response and rebuttal.
  • Develop media strategies and manage communications for high-profile issues in a fast-paced environment.
  • Draft key messages, narratives, statements, and communication plans.
  • Offer high-quality media and digital monitoring services, taking action to insert the organisation’s voice and rebut inaccuracies.
  • Provide strategic communications advice during significant incidents and long-running issues.
  • Collaborate with the wider communications team to ensure delivery of portfolio and priorities.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven track record in a busy media operation.
  • Strong understanding of media and channel monitoring using digital tools.
  • Experience in delivering high-quality, fast-time rebuttal on digital channels.
  • Ability to work at pace under deadline pressure.
  • Strong coordination skills and experience in proactive media planning and creative media campaigns.
  • Practical understanding of using data and insight to drive communications.
  • Experience in providing advice to senior figures on complex issues.
  • Demonstrable experience in shaping and delivering digital content across various channels.
