The Role

The Assistant Building Fire Safety Offer (ABFSO) will work within the Building Fire Safety Team under the Development and Regeneration directorate to help deliver their programme of cladding remediation and Building Safety Act 2022 compliance work to buildings across Poplar HARCA estates.

The ABFSO will fulfil a part Assistant to the Building Manager role and part Resident Liaison Officer role. The ABFSO principle role will be to assist the Building Fire Safety Team with technical and administrative support to ensure Poplar HARCA meets it statutory obligations under the Building Safety Act 2022 and associated new legislation. The ABFSO will also undertake a part Resident Liaison Officer role.

This will require close working with residents and contractors to ensure the best communication is provided to residents to minimise the impact of the works upon them. This will be achieved by such actions as providing newsletters and specific updates, arranging contractor appointments, carrying out site and resident visits, attending resident meetings and being a focal point for resident contact and correspondence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in gathering building information, reviewing building plans and designs to establish building status, identification of risk, and to ensure adherence to current legislation.
  • Coordinate surveys and liaise with consultant teams to provide specialist building assessments.
  • Support the Building Fire Safety Team in developing and implementing fire safety procedures and processes.
  • Attend project progress meetings with contractors carrying out cladding remediation works.
  • Collaborate with other departments within Poplar HARCA, contractors, and consultants to address safety concerns and resolve compliance issues.
  • Stay updated on current safety regulations, codes, and industry best practices to ensure compliance and promote a safe working environment.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation related to safety inspections and compliance activities and resident correspondence and contacts.
  • Take on the role of resident liaison officer required in connection with building assessments and cladding remediation works required to multiple Poplar HARCA residential blocks.
  • Manage and coordinate the RLO support staff / Development Public Affairs Coordinator, who will provide intermittent assistance.

Skills and Qualifications

  • GCSE English or equivalent
  • RICS Certification in Building Safety, Construction Project Management or a related field
  • NEBOSH Risk Assessment or Fire Safety qualification or equivalent.
  • Good communication skills written and oral
  • Able to prepare and write newsletters.
  • Good IT skills (e-mail, Microsoft Word and Excel).
  • Able to prioritise, plan and manage own workload and projects to meet conflicting work demands and deadlines.
  • Experience in a Project Management role, ideally in a fire safety management environment
  • Experience in a resident facing role.
  • Previous position in a similar role would be desirable
