We are now seeking, for our site in Pe­ter­bo­rough:

Lead Mechanical Engineer (m/f/d)

You will lead a small team of mechanical design engineers, especially for our bakery sector. This role requires hands-on technical design leader­ship, in addition to mana­ging the team work­load, communi­cation, quality, and long-term professional develop­ment of your team.

Main Duties

Technical

  • Provide tech­nical direc­tion to the team, produc­ing sound engi­neer­ing solu­tions to engi­neer­ing prob­lems, backed up with design analy­sis where appro­pri­ate
  • Devel­op and imple­ment innov­a­tive solu­tions to prob­lems incor­po­rat­ing the latest materi­als, manu­fac­tur­ing pro­cesses and tech­nology to drive the prod­uct range forward
  • Man­age prod­uct devel­op­ments, ensur­ing changes are con­trolled and imple­mented across the prod­uct range to main­tain a stan­dard equip­ment offer­ing
  • Take over­all design respon­sibil­ity for proj­ects assigned to the team and man­age them from proj­ect launch to comple­tion ensur­ing all proj­ect deliv­er­ables are met
  • Ensure all required design stan­dards and legis­la­tion are met and sup­port­ing doc­u­ment­a­tion is pro­duced and approved
  • Warrant equip­ment qual­ity, resolv­ing any design prob­lems found dur­ing manu­fac­tur­ing or com­mis­sion­ing
  • Coor­di­nate tech­nical sup­port to sales to help pro­duce accu­rate proj­ect pro­pos­als and man­age proj­ect risk.
  • Guarantee designs comply with Baker Perkins stan­dards and qual­ity pro­ce­dures
  • Sup­port and where appro­priate lead mech­ani­cal test­ing in the fac­tory and/or on site
  • Actively share knowl­edge across the depart­ment to facilitate improving all product sectors and pro­mote a com­mon approach
  • Safeguard com­mer­cial impli­ca­tions are con­sid­ered and under­stood when deci­sions are made by the team, includ­ing busi­ness risk, qual­ity, cost and sched­ule

Team Management

  • Day-to-day management of team members
  • Recruitment and training plans for direct reports as well as mentoring of junior engineers
  • Management of project design cost, schedule and quality
  • Review and provide feedback on prospects including schedule, design hours and project risk
  • Deputise for the engineering manager or other lead sector engineers when needed
  • Drive and be a role model for the company values and behaviours
  • Be aware of and follow all company health and safety policies and procedures, in respect of self and others
Candidate Profile
  • Degree in me­chan­ical en­gi­neer­ing (BEng or higher) or equi­val­ent
  • Strong hands-on ex­pe­ri­ence in de­sign, analy­sis and test­ing of me­chan­i­cal sys­tems
  • Ex­pe­ri­ence in a rel­e­vant area of cap­i­tal equip­ment: food and bev­er­age, O&G, phar­ma­ceu­ti­cals, etc.
  • Ex­cel­lent prob­lem-­solv­ing skills and abil­ity to de­vel­op in­no­va­tive so­lu­tions
  • Management know-how is an ad­van­tage, but not es­sen­tial
  • Capability to man­age mul­ti­ple proj­ects and pri­ori­ti­se ac­cord­ing­ly
  • Dexterity in using 3D drawing packages and PLM software, and in checking me­chan­i­cal cal­cu­la­tions
  • Cus­tomer-­o­ri­ent­ed and com­mer­cially aware
